I’m Sander Tilsley, a filmmaker, podcast host and the founder of Firestarters.

I started as a filmmaker. For years, my job was to take hours of real life and shape them into a few minutes that felt clear.

That taught me something I still carry with me: an edit can be honest and still change the meaning. Every question, cut, camera angle and missing moment influences the story that remains.

The first Firestarters recording was meant to supply a few honest lines for a film with Marco Bailey. I set up what I jokingly thought of as a pretend podcast. The conversation became more valuable than the lines I had gone looking for.

One conversation became many.

I sat across from founders, artists and people whose lives were changing. They often arrived to talk about their work. Somewhere in the conversation, they began hearing the story beneath it.

I began hearing mine too.

A question started following me:

Which story is organizing the way this person sees their life, and does it still fit?

That question feels urgent now.

AI can gather scattered memories, public fragments and borrowed language, then return a convincing identity in seconds. Platforms reward the clearest and most repeatable version of us. A story can sound complete long before life has tested it.

I believe narrative awareness will become a basic human skill.

It begins with noticing the story you are living inside. Separating what happened from what it came to mean. Recognizing who else has held the pen. Testing the story against your actions, relationships and everyday life. Staying free to revise it when better evidence arrives.

It also changes how we listen.

Another person may need a witness, a question or a little distance. They still keep the pen.

Firestarters is where I am building this belief in public.

Helps people practice the same awareness in their own lives.

The future will be crowded with convincing stories. I want Firestarters to help people choose more consciously which stories they live by, handle other people's stories with greater care, and pass something honest forward.

That, to me, is what it means to be a firestarter.
